The Cal.12 is an automatic, so there shouldn't be a need to wind unless you're not wearing it regularly. That said, yes, the crown should be wound clockwise, it helps if you hold the watch upside-down!
If there's lots of resistance, it may be fully-wound though. Winding it further shouldn't hurt it but as it's old, you may want to err on the side of caution.
My advice would be to let it run for a day or two, see when it stops, then try winding it a bit. If there's still a lot of resistance in the crown, take it to a watchmaker as it could require some oil or a repair.
