: Thanks to everyone who has expressed a opinion on this subject and i have taken everybodies views into consideration......however,i took the descision to try on an old Omega dial with a cotton bud and some distilled water, and it seems to have worked on this dial. This particular dial is a matt black style and i was concerned that i would make it shiny if i tried to get the marks off.......however as i said in this case it has worked,i was very carefull and gentle.......but it was a risk, and i think that until i have another dial i don't mind damaging.....i'll leave it to the experts.
Thanks again.

: I don't have much experience in actually trying
: to have dials cleaned, and I would not even
: attempt to do this myself, but I have seen a
: range of messes that have resulted from
: attempts to do so. often, the dial seems
: worse for the attempt at cleaning it.
: I'm really not sure what a top professional
: could accomplish, or what modern technology
: may offer, but I would proceed with extreme
: caution in having anyone touch the dial.
: all this, in my humble opinion.
