Fix It Before You Sell It

My recommendation would be to have the watch overhauled before trying to sell it.

With the chrono button jammed, you will take a big haircut if you attempt to sell it "as is". Any purchaser will know that he will need to incur the cost of repair and fill face the risk that there is a real problem (for example, a part that is difficult to find) . . . this situation will result in your facing a big discount.

In terms of where to sell, you will face big fees from an auction house, and the timeline can be long, from the time to send the watch to the time you receive the proceeds. My recommendation -- sell it on ChronoTrader or eBay, and you will be months ahead of an auction house.

: Hi guys - through what I can only characterize as a stroke of good
: fortune, I recently acquired a barrel-case Carrera from circa
: 1974 that by all appearances is legitimately NOS. I bought it
: via a long-time watch dealer in Switzerland that shuttered its
: doors a while back due to the owner's passing, and I gather he
: was a Heuer AD back in the day. Click here to see some photos of
: the watch: https://goo.gl/photos/EfFe5g6v2Bc2XRpu6

: The only vague sign of wear on it is on the clasp,
: which has an unusual "slide" mechanism I can't recall
: ever previously seeing; it has a barely visible amount of wear,
: presumably from people trying it on (myself included).

: While I'm a long-time collector, my Heuer-specific expertise is
: somewhat limited, and this is definitely the first time I've
: ever come across an NOS watch that's over 40 years old!
: Remarkably, it still runs and keeps good time, though its top
: chrono button appears to be jammed. I'm not interested in
: keeping the watch, so I'm curious to hear opinions on what I
: should do with it. Should I get it serviced before anything
: else, and if so, do you guys have any recommendations for
: vintage Heuer specialists? (I have my "Omega guy" and
: "Rolex guy," but they work exclusively with those
: brands.) Also, I know it's not one of the "classic"
: Carrera references and has the clearly-'70s-vintage barrel
: design, but how does one go about establishing a valuation for
: such an item? Should I contact one (or more) of the auction
: houses? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!
