Not Certain, but Very Suspicious

Yep -- this one looks stunningly good at first glance.

The second and thrid glances left me wondering about the following items:

  • the choice of numerals / arabics for the hours (1 through 12) and dates (1 through 31) seems unusual for a Heuer; I'm not sure I've seen this font on a Heuer
  • this one has "railroad tracks" around the recorders at 9:00 (nine o'clock) and 3:00 (three o'clock); I can't recall these on this Heuer model
  • notice that there is no "ring" around the hour recorder at 6:00 (six o'clock); in fact, there are not even hash marks (for the hours and half-hours); refinishers often have trouble doing this "ring", so they go without it
  • the main hour and minute hands (for time of day) seem too short

Bottom Line: It has several tell-tale signs of being a refinished dial; I took a look, but did not even bother with the translation [ maybe the seller tells us something about the questions I have raised -- ?? ] . . . tell-tales + private auction + less than perfect seller feedback = "no thanks".

: What do people think of this?
: Like alot of other perfect 1940-50s
: "Heuers" offered through this
: seller, it doesnt look quite
: "right".

: But I have to say if this is a refinished dial
: it is a work of art. To my eyes I can't see
: anything wrong in terms of the
: "quality" of the dial markings,
: though the style seems strange for the
: Heuers I know. But who knows, maybe my
: instinct is wrong.

: Jeff any comments on refinishing techniques
: ...?
