re: this particular "prototype" hands have been taken from an Elgin cal 12 chronograph.

I also wouldn't touch one of these with a barge pole except to source cal 12 spare parts, though it would be interesting to see the signature on the caseback and any case reference numbers. Also the back of the dial may give a clue to where it has come from.
