I think all of us have faced a similar question. I decided to get both, a Seamaster Chronograph and a Speedmaster Chronograph. I wear my Seamaster for more active things (despite its large size, but you won't have that problem if you get just a regular automatic or quartz) and my Speedmaster as a formal and leisure watch. If it's ruggedness you want though, go for the Seamaster. It feels more solid and heavy on your wrist, and the water-tightness features are much, much better. Even if it is for stuff as simple as swimming in a pool, you want a watch with good water-tight features (screw down back, crown) because the sloshing around can be hard on the seals. I wear my speedmaster for less strenuous things, as not only does the case feel less hardy than my Seamaster, but the bracelet on the Seamaster also feels heavier and more sturdy. That's my suggestion, but the best idea is just to go to a jeweler and handle both watches. I think you'll find the Seamaster looks and feels more rugged. It also has an easier to read face and hands.
