To be most fair, you have to compare *steet* price new to what you can resell it for. While the retail price of the SMP is $1750, they can be bought new from reputable sources for less. But you still use the *retail* price as the fixed standard for measuring the resale percentage against a standard 'new' pricing benchmark.
So you would compare the *street* price of new SMP at around $1450 to the 50% of the $1750 *retail* price as the resale value, making the loss on resale even less--$575.
The loss on resale of the Rolex would also be somewhat different, though there is less possible discount on them at the street price level. So the Rolex might compare at $3450 (10% off retail) street price new minus 70% of the *retail* price as $2660 for a loss on resale of $790.
Either way, the more expensive the watch, the more likely you will lose more on reselling a watch bought 'new.' So used watches are almost always a better buy for resale, as what you pay is already adjusted to the resale market price.
