First, let me say that it's great to see some familiar faces here in Derek's NONCOMMERCIAL forum!
I've owned and resold two Seamasters: The pre-Bond and the Bond, both SS. Derek's point is very well-taken, but I'd like to add my two cents on the impact of the net on resale. I bought both Seamasters at about 30% off their list prices brand new. I held the pre-Bond for five years and recovered approximately 50% of my money. BUT- I didn't know what I was doing, and the watch had numerous battle scars. The Bond sold within two days, and I recovered 60% of my initial purchase.
If this is your first higher-end purchase- I strongly encourage you to buy NEW, and chalk whatever loss (if any) you take up to a learning experience. Like all mechanical things, Seamasters may need tweeks and adjustments. The peace of mind of having a reputable, knowledgeable dealer to hold accountable is well worth the relatively small amount you'll lose on resale. Good luck!
