I cannot tell you what the face is made of, but I would have guessed it was aluminum or some other alloy.
I must admit that when I received my seamaster in the mail, the face looked strange close up. However, I believe it is due to the alternating colors of the waves and the background. I also think it was due to relying on photos prior to purchasing my watch. I think the waves give the face an interesting look, especially when you move and you high the highlights of the waves. Further, I agree that from a distance, the look is unbeatable.
For me, the face has really grown on me, and I really like the look. However, I must admit, I'll be interested to see a black version in the future.
Enjoy the watch. IMO, its a great watch for the $$.
