I am stunned and saddened to hear about Derek's death. He and I grew up two doors apart and played together many hours as children. I remember his grandparents, his mother's white Buick Skylark and the many times my mother and I carpooled with them to school, saving me a walk up a VERY STEEP Vickers Drive and getting a few minutes "Tubby & Lester" before school TV time in while he finished his Ovaltine. I remember when he got his dog Smokey, when the playhouse got built, the pedal car and wagon we rode down his driveway and crashed it into the big granite all, playing house in the Japanese cherry trees ... and playing doctor a time or two ;-} ... with our many playmates on our street, going exploring in the creek, and going through school just a couple of year apart, the Science Fiction club parties (I was just a lurker, really, not a reader or fan). We were neighbors off and on till a few years ago. I will say a prayer of peace for him and his family.
