I know where you're coming from - I loved the blue Geneve wave dial and the 9 link bracelet on the 2298/96, but by the time I had gotten around to trying to find a 2298 after my 2296 nightmare was finally over, the 2298's were all gone.
If I were in your position, I'd probably do what you're doing, and I wouldn't be overly polite or kind to the crook that sold you the used watch in the first place.
