Believe you me, I know exactly what you're going through. Being a died-in-the-wool cheapskate, the very thought of spending a grand or two on a wristwatch nearly gives me an ulcer. I only recently allowed myself to indulge in what has been an enthusiasm of mine for many years.
Before I buy a watch, I research, research, reconsider, research some more, compare, put it out of my mind, make one pros-and cons list after another, then research some more. Ultimately, by the time I buy a watch - or, for that matter, anything else I can really do without - I am very pleased with what I have.
Watch-wise, I have a 1996 ti-and-gold Breitling Aerospace, a titanium Omega Seamaster Pro Chrono, a steel back Omega Speedy Pro (on the way), and an Omega Constellation '95 steel and gold automatic chronometer (also coming). I took years deciding to buy each of them, and they all give me an immense amount of pleasure and entertainment. They are also all outstanding time keeping instruments. A watch hobby isn't cheap, but compared to, say, keeping a garage full of sports cars, it's fairly affordable.
As I've said many times, the chase is the best part of the hunt. Enjoy yours.
