Inclined to say that he got a fake. First off all Solid gold Rolex models currently have a fully solid bracelet with SELs and screw links. Furthermore the clasp mechanism has been updated to a hidden deployment which is made out of solid pieces of gold, not stamped. A Solid 18K Datejust should rival if not be heavier than your SMP, and IMHO the bracelet is of a better construction due to the fully solid construction and the screw links. So either he bought one that was older or he got a fake.
