I think it's an admission by eBay...

...that they cannot police spam or fraudulent e-mails sent to underbidders whose information is stolen from their systems.

This has always been a complaint against eBay. I'm sure eBay was probably successfully sued by someone who lost money in a scam, and this new policy is their reaction.

As SteveW has pointed out, there are good and bad aspects of this new policy. The shills must be having a field day.

On the other hand, I miss not knowing who I'm bidding against. There are certain people whose toes I'd rather not step on when bidding on eBay items.

I was a lot more comfortable with the old system.
