Keep them running or not?

Please forgive me for asking this because I'm sure it's been discussed before, before my time here that is, but I was wondering if it's a good idea to keep mechanical watches running when not in use. My financial condition has allowed me to acquire several good timepieces, Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Oris and several others. I rotate them every so often but they do sit in the drawer, some for weeks, if not months at a time. Keeping them running would seem to cause unnecessary wear. But I'm sure there is a flip side to this thought since they do make winding devices. Having the watch ready to go,correct time etc, is not necessary. I'll gladly wind them if that's the thing to do. Any advice? Or point me in the right direction and I'll look it up myself.
