Re: Speedmaster Moonwatch 3570.50 value question

: Greetings All,

: I would like to buy a Speedmaster model 3570.50 and of course have
: been looking at ebay auctions. There is a seller on ebay that offers this model new for $2400, but I routinely see people paying $1900 plus for watches ten or more years old with this same model number. Is there some value to in these older watches that I'm not aware of? If not, it doesn't seem to make sense to pay only 20% less for an older watch of unknown mechanical condition. Is there something people are seeking in the older watches ? Can anyone share their thoughts on this ?

: Thanks,

: Dave

Depends a lot on the age and condition of the watch, but in my opinion, Speedies in the 10-30 yo range for over $1500 are not worth it. Over 30, maybe and over 35 yeah, probably, but not the 10-30 range. There is nothing overly special about those, and in fact, most will need some kind of service at a cost of $300+. I followed ebay auctions for several months recently. Its possible to get one second hand, less than 5 yo in good to excellent condition for around $1750 with box + papers. You have to have a little patience. Personally, I think some of the prices are driven just by uneducated masses with money looking to get a watch and its an impulse bid. There may be some sentimental reasons to buy watches in the 10-30 range, like a birthday commemoration, etc., but to pay close to the value of a New one (with discount) is just insane, even if the watch is in excellent condition. Just my 2C worth.
