Re: Omega - Presentation vs. "Regular"
: I'm a newbie to Omega collecting, and I'm treading very carefully
: into this potentially expensive addiction. I've seen several
: "presentation" Omegas on eBay and other places. By
: "presentation," I mean the the ones with things
: engraved on the back like "To John Jones, ACME Inc., Jan.
: 12, 1957," that used to be given out as gifts in the old
: days when people retired. I've noticed that these watches tend
: to sell/be listed for less than "regular" Omegas.
: Does anyone have an idea as to the reason for the price difference?
: Were the presentation Omegas made more cheaply? Is it an
: aesthetic thing (i.e., some people don't want a watch with
: someone else's name engraved on it)? Are most of these fake? Any
: insights would be appreciated.
The Omegas with personalization on the back or a company logo or something of that sort of thing, does indeed devalue the watch.
Not in every case, but most cases. I understand how one would feel buying a watch that had someone elses name engraved in the back.
I own one and it doesn't bother me, I can see how it would though. A relative passes away, his watch is sold for peanuts, it doesn't say
much about the way the family felt about him. It would seem items like that would get better treatment from ones family.
I've never seen a personized fake watch, I guess they exist.
Some of the personalizations are fairly easy to get rid of, shallow engravings or smalls initials would be fairly simple, for some of the larger
ones, sometimes a good buffing would do away with them. I've got two and one was easily removed with buffing, the other doesn't
bother me as it was a great price on a nice watch.
