Comments re Heuer 510 Series / Can Any "No Name" Do Well?

The low prices on the 510 series have been baffling to me for a while, and I have been intending to post on the subject. The AMI version sells in the range of $2,500 to $3,500 (which seems respectable), and we see some decent prices for the 5100 powered Silverstones and Cortinas, but the "normal" 510 watches (Steel, Black, Pewter and Olive Drab) seem to be selling at bargain basement prices. Some samples sell at under $1,000; it seems that even the best samples struggle to break $1,500.

These are awesome watches -- built like a rock; reliable movements; very legible; nice colors; etc. Maybe they struggle because they have "no name"? Compare the prices of the Carreras and the similar "no name" chronos; look at the "no names" of the 1950's . . . maybe the answer is that these 510 series watches will always struggle, becuase they have no name. They have no model name on the dial; in the catalog, they are called "Series 1000" (which has never caught on); we call them the "5100-powered guys" . . . but there is no name that creates the nice image / mystique.

I tend to agree with most of David's crystal ball predictions, but for some reason, the prediction regarding the 510 series seems the most doubtful to me. I hope that I am wrong, as I really like these watches, but they do seem to be struggling right now.
