Well, not strictly true, I've done just that on a Heuer diver a long time ago. Rodico will do the job too... Sounds to me that your watchmaker didn't want to bother or hadn't the experience...
...but I'm asking specifically about the silver finished dial on an Autavia, the finishes are completely different.
