Don't know why there should be such a difference in case serials, though I'd be reassured that the movements are close. Maybe the first number of the case ref indicates material, like the final digit of the later four digit serials? Most of the gold watches seem to have been offered in 14K and 18K versions at the time, and sometimes in rose 18K too.
