There is no gap.
This is the thickness of the tachymetre scale.
I attached a new picture I just took, using the flash on my camera, I hope you can see thickness of the tachymeter scale.
And yes, you are right, this watch is not new like it was when it left the factory nearly 40 years ago.
It is an old, used watch.
