I've been to Salzburg quite a few times, but I think Mozartkugeln are pretty well known nowadays - though unfortunately mostly as the mass-produced ones rather than the "proper" hand-made ones. Some of the Munich-Salzburg trains stopped at Starnberg, so I didn't even to travel to Munich first, so it was quite a nice day out, if you could pick a day when it wasn't crowded with tourists. I think the most memorable meal I had in Salzburg was watermelon on the banks of the Salzach on a gloriously sunny day, but I do like Mozartkugeln too - I'm fond of marzipan, though it makes you think Hansa before you'd think Salzburg!
