Hi Mick - yes you got it the Moire effect. When considering a new camera I considered the D800/D800E and read all about it. These were sot on my D300 and Canon G12 and still the Moire effect. Both these cameras should in theory have the low pass filter. Back to the D800/800E - at 36.3 mega pixels on full frame I would need a whole new computer to handle those file sizes so I shelved the idea.
