Since then, I am glad to say that my SMP has functioned correctly and the 'fine' people at authenticwatches have repaired it twice 'free of charge'.

Well, it's good to hear your SMP is working at the moment anyway...

My question today is not about Omega, but I could not find the appropriate forum to ask so I hope you can help.

My brother-in-law is a Marine Scout Sniper school graduate as of this week and will be returning to Iraq for his second tour in March. I really want to get him a functional, durable watch (he currently wears a timex) to take with him. What should I get? I would really like something in the $200-$300 range with a rubber strap.

I noticed a lot of the embedded reporters a couple (my gosh, it's rapidly coming up on four years ago!) were wearing Victorinox Swiss Army watches back in the early days of the invasion of Iraq:

V-Swiss Army seem to have a variety of PVD Black or Black Anodized Aluminum models that would seem to be an appropriate choice for a Sniper looking for a "subduded" watch to wear. The model pictured above retails for $125 US and comes on a Rubber Strap (and a Large Bluck Rubber Strap isavailable for $30). I'd imagine a Marine Sniper might have large wrists.

The main draw back I see is it's anemic W/R of 5meters.

Since I don't fire many guns and have never been in any type of situation such as the sand and temperatures of Iraq, I am completely lost. Most of the information I find online suggests something like a G-shock from Casio. I don't mind buying him a $50 Wal-mart special if that is what will do the job, but I know you guys have something better in mind.

Other than the various stripes of Swiss Army, I'd recommend looking at the Tissot T-Touch models. One of them, perhaps one of the T-Trekking models (which has a built in Temp / Altitude / Humidity / Compass function might be useful...

But it's water resistance isn't great either (30m)...

Suggestions?
