Hey Tim, sounds like we are on the same page
In Response To: No Problem ()

I agree whole heartedly, the problem is that there are many within the community who are heavily vested in Rolex and hype the brand...you should have seen what happened Dr Odets when he wrote that Explorer review, talk about a constant assault. I have been on other forums where the Rolex guys will verbally beat someone down for saying anything they percieve as "negative" regardless of how true or warranted the comment was. Something you just don't see on other brands forums as typically those owners are more realistic about the brand/product and aren't as emotionally invested (or financially as I am sure that plays a part as well, you overpay that much for anything and you must have to be defensive)

With regards to the workmanship, I also feel that for what one pays with Rolex it is a serious letdown, and I believe we are both talking about just quality of finish work and attention to detail, not the type of finish or their style...especially when one compares to a brand like Omega. Just in looking at the case, dial and what not it is clear Omega puts a bit more effort into "making things right" where Rolex figures their buyers don't care so why should we and does a half fast job. I am just amazed that they can continue to raise prices as they do and people still pay, clearly a sign that their buyers aren't that informed or just don't care that they are paying for a name.

Then again I typically find this problem plagues all of the biggest known brands...seems like the market leaders on average aren't all they are cracked up to be if they are in a segment that has little competition

As far as the Sunglasses are concerned I know what you mean, the only thing about Ray Bans is that on average they are pretty "cheap" when compared to others like Revo and Maui Jim...but they are competitive with Oakley as you mentioned....my wife has a pair of Ray Bans and they are ok, but nothing spectacular, plus their new warranty coverage stinks compared to what they used to offer, then again I believe Oakley's old warranty was better as well.

Some other brands I find that are more sizzle than steak are Bose (Don't even get me started on that), Modern Mercedes (their prices are a joke and their service/reliability is horrible), as mentioned before Tiffanys items, and Montblanc...there are a few more but the theme is the same, great examples are Intel and when they were around 3DFX....only when they got some real competition did their products improve, before that they overpriced old technology.

It stinks seeing these once really decent brands that made honest products turn more to simply trading on their name..hopefully the competition such as Omega can make a huge impact on the market and level things out a bit...as ultimately that is the best for us as consumers, but if people keep buying on status alone and without much research then I doubt much will change.

Oh well good talking to you Tim
