Re: Routine Service and Dial Refinish *LINK*

Hi Max

The cal 711 was a Piguet copper electroplated movement which looks a bit like pink gold. I dont believe they had solid gold balances on the 711. Steve has a good selection of brochures of these models on his site.

Re you dial. Has it just crazed? Is the tiger eye feature still visible and unaffected? I suspect it may be caused by moisture or water vapour rising from the wrist as these models were not water resistant.

There may still be NOS dials around for your model and it may be a case of looking around. I moast certainly wouldnt refinish the dial as it may devalue the watch. The other option is having the dial 'stabilised'. Ive had a couple of dial stabilised by a specialist restorer at my local museum. A ceramics restorer or art restorer at your local museum may be able to give you some advice.

Cheers

: Thanks for the reply, John.
: I have reviewed the list of U.S. Omega service
: centers. Spoke with the gentleman in Dallas
: first, primarily because he is closest.
: What concerns me is that I saw somewhere some
: harsh criticism of one of the others. I was
: hoping to get some feedback on any of them.

: Yeah, the refinishing of the dial is a problem.
: The original finish simulated a brown tiger
: eye quartz. I might just settle for a plain
: dark brown.

: This is probably off topic for this thread, but
: I ran across this on the Omega Constellation
: collector's site: "The rarer Calibre
: 700 series Superflat movements came in both
: solid white and yellow gold, some had a
: solid gold balance of which only 12,500
: pieces were made. Calibre 711 came in solid
: gold and stainless steel cases..."

: Not knowing what I am looking at when viewing
: the movement, I see that all the works
: except a couple of gears are gold in color.
: However, there are no marks on the movement
: to indicate it is gold. Is it possible this
: is one of the gold movements mentioned
: above? Is it possible the dial plate is
: gold, or more likely brass?

: Thanks again for your response.
