Re: Omega dynamic chronograph cal 1141
I bought a cheap but beautiful winder on e-bay (winds 4 watches, nice veneer and lacquer finish) but believe it over wound a Dunhill automatic and a Maurice Lacroix pontos reserve de marche since both stopped and had to be repaired under warranty. The Dunhill, they told me, appeared to be overwound. I was told this was not possible since automatic watches have a clutch preventing overwinding them . . . . However, I plugged the winder into an appliance timer so it is only on 3 1/2 hours per day and lo and behold, no more problems. So, my non-technical, non-official opinion is that yes, winders can over wind automatic watches. If they cycle say, 1/2 hour on and then 2 hours off and this continues 24/7, I believe the watch will become overwound as the mainspring is never allowed to unwind even a teeny fraction. It becomes too tightly wound, I say. Remember, when you wind a manual watch, it has, perhaps, 8 hours of "sleep" at night in which to partially unwind, keeping the spring "resilient". Anybody agree?
