A well maintained, properly adjusted modern automatic watch cannot be overwound.

An ill maintained or ill adjusted watch may have an error with the bridle:

This bridle slips along the barrel wall before excess pressure is passed to the going train and causing a defect known as “banking.” This banking occurs when the balance amplitude is too high and the impulse jewel strikes the back of the horns of the pallet fork.

Winding in excess of that needed causes wear to the bridle and the mainspring barrel and not much else in a healthy watch.
