FS: Hamilton Vintage RAF Chronograph Broad Arrow

For sale, this very attractive and interesting Pilot’s chronograph issued, specifically by Hamilton to Britain’s own Ministry of defense, (MoD) More specifically to the infamous Royal Air Force branch.

The watch was delivered in 1970 making it a first-year example.
Don’t get fooled by its sexy looks, this handy tool watch has seen active service aiding RAF pilots in both navigation and synchronization during their missions.
Cool right? Keep reading as this watch has some cooler facts about it!

Please read the condition report carefully to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.

MODEL / REFERENCE: Hamilton ‘broad arrow’ Pilot’s chronograph Ref. 6BB. Serial number: A/159.

DIAL+HANDS: Hamilton issued two dial versions for this chronograph. This timepiece comes with the scarcer and more legible ‘sterile’ dial. It appears more attractive for its glossy finish. the broad arrow signifies that it is property of “Her Majesty’s Service”. The printing is all crisp throughout and gives a nice contrast to the glossy black colour.
The Circle T’ marking delineates the presence of tritium on the dial: the 12 and 6 arabic numbers are luminous as well as the hour marker dots. The intact lume has aged beautifully taking a pumpkin hue and adding to the charm of the dial.
The luminous sword hands are correct and are in excellent condition with no decay and warmer lume material making them probably a service replacement.

CRYSTAL: The watch comes with its original plexiglass crystal in outstanding condition.
MOVEMENT: Following the MoD’s Defense standard ( DEF-STAN ) new requirements, All chronographs ordered at the time, housed a Valjoux 7733, a cost effective, reliable and easy to service movement.
This timepiece is no exception as it comes with a manually wound two-button, two-register, 30-minute chronograph movement. The bridge bears the name of the brand. It is in fully functional condition, ticks strong, winds, sets, and runs smoothly as intended.

CASE: The stainless-steel case measures 39mm crown excluded and 46mm lug to lug making it very wearable by today’s standards. The beefed right side is designed to let the crown and pushers sit flush with the case thus protecting them from accidental bumps. A very well thought design earning it the nickname ‘asymmetrical chronograph ‘.
Overall, it is in very good original, military worn condition, presenting some subtle scratches throughout along with the original satin finish. The side of the case shows some minor dings and perhaps has been lightly polished before.
As a military watch, the 20mm spring bars are welded to the case for added security.

CASEBACK: The screw down caseback has six notches and matches the case’s finish. Despite being hidden to the wearer, it displays correct military engravings that reveal more information about the watch:
The aforementioned broad Arrow indicates a military lineage, a property of the MoD.
6BB denotes the issuing agency: The Royal Air Force. (RAF)
The model type number is 924-3306.
The watch serial number is A/159 and the year of issue is 1970.

This particular watch has been issued to one unit, then returned and reissued through another unit. Which explains the barred W10 engraving and the presence of the Royal Australian navy stamp 6645-99 adding to the watch’s cool factor.

Crown+Pushers: The crown is unsigned and correct to the watch. The pushers are authentic too

BRACELET: The watch comes on black leather strap with unsigned steel buckle

ACCESSORIES: Watch Roll. This Hamilton remains highly undervalued and for an affordable price you can get a historically important military issued chronograph. Despite the workhorse movement used, the quality is just robust and feels very solid. This was issued to Air Force pilots after all.
With its popular and influential design still lasting today, this insanely well-built watch is the perfect rugged daily wearer.
