Also, looking at Indianapolis qualifying times for the period 1960 to 1974, we see that this timer would have been useful in 1970, but would out outlived its usefulness by 1971.

The stopwatch is marked to show speeds from 155 MPH to 175 MPH. We see that the top qualifying time jumped from 170 MPH in 1970 to 178 in 1971, so the timer would have been of limited usefulness in 1971.
