I note the auction house Antiquorum uses a letter/number system like this. The problem with any grading system is of beauty in the eye of the beholder. If only a few are doing the grading then the results will be somewhat consistent. Otherwise there will be a great variance which defeats the whole concept. I don't see an easy reliable solution, however a good picture is surely worth a thousand words in any purchase.
