Fantastic photo and posting!! Huge thanks for this discovery!!
I must be quick right now, but ask the question . . . is this Reference 2547S (Carrera 12 Dato), the "Dan Gurney Carrera?".
Seems to me that the heavy markings above the Heuer shield must be the day / month windows, rather than the word "Carrera". Notice that we seem to have the "day" hand, with the arc at the end, aimed right at the lower pusher (four o'clock).
Any other views on this?

: I was just out at the Long Beach Grand Prix which is a race with
: special meaning to legendary race car driver Dan Gurney. I
: didn't get to see Dan this year but I always think about him a
: lot when I am there because the media center I work in while at
: the race is named after him. Anyway, when I got back to Indy
: today the wonderful Mary Ellen who runs the photo archives at
: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway found this photo for me. It
: shows Dan at the Speedway in the early '70s. He is wearing a
: chronograph wrist watch which looks suspiciously like a Heuer
: Carrera and holding a stopwatch which is for sure a Heuer.
: What do you all think?
