Autavia 2446 Rindt

Rindt story from Norway

In 1967 Anton Svankil, the merchant ship captain from Hvaler attended the christening ceremony for his new command, M/S Farmand. Those occasions regularly involved presents to the Godmother, the ship owner and the captain taking over the new built ship. Captain Svankil was on this festive occasion presented with this Heuer Autavia (reference 2446, serial number 96069 on a Gay Freres bracelet dated 1/67).

Captain Svankil came from Kirkøy, Hvaler, the archipelago of islands forming the east entrance to the Oslo fjord. There his family had resided since the 16th century. He became a sailor during World War II and was qualified as Norway´s youngest merchant ship captain in 1945. He retired from the sea in 1983 after 38 years .

Information about M/S Farmand can be found here:

The shipowner Anton von der Lippes villa on Tønsberg harbor. It was built in 1926. Drawn by Norway´s most famous architect Arnstein Arneberg. Quite a coincidence that I was the lucky owner of this house together with my business partner from 1993 to 2007.
