For what it's worth, my brother in law was a submariner in the Navy, and following a stop in some far flung location, a Petty Officer bought a shiny new Submariner.(from an authorised dealer, so no worries about authenticity)

Shortly after this, it was decided to 'test' the water resistance claims.
cue attach the watch to something in the conning tower, and submerge to 1,000 feet.

Surface, and all look at flooded watch...ooops.

He seems to recall that it was replaced as a gesture of goodwill as opposed to under warranty.
