Water -resistance. The definitive answer.

Hey everybody. I sell watches here in Australia and I am always asked about water-resistance. I usually tell customers that for true WR, they should be looking at 100 metres or more.
And then I started thinking; what is considered proper water resistance? Some instruction books for various brands will state that 50m is suitable for swimming and snorkelling, but I'm not so sure. The last thing I want to do is misinform a customer who is spending hard-earned cash on a watch.
I may know a few things about watches, but I will admit that I don't know it all and this question has always bugged me.
So, ladies and gentlemen, I ask you; If you were going to swim with your watch on, how water resistant would it have to be? What is considered "truly" water-resistant?
