I think it is real.
This is simply they way this model looked back in the late 90s. I've seeen this model many times and handled a few. The luminescence (sp?) has darkened a bit, but besides that, it seems to be in good shape. But a marginal pic. is always a bad sign that wear is more serious than owner wants to admit...IMHO.
