column-wheel in 3303

I hear a lot of this thing mentioned in some of the OMEGA chronographs called "column-wheel" that is controlling the chronograph function in caliber 3303 and others that are based on this.
I don't know anything mechanical, and I am curious. What is so special about this "column-wheel"? and how is it different from other way (I don't even know what the "other way" is since I don't know what this thing does and how)? Can anyone tell me anything about this? Is this something good? and why? or know a site that explains about this?
