Atomic Clocks

I have heard a number of people mention from time to time that they use atomic clocks to set their mechanical clocks. I did this for a while but had occasional trouble with the atomic clock. I was wondering if anyone could explain what was going on and what could be done about it.

Generally the atomic clock worked flawlessly. However, on occasion, it would give a totally incorrect time. In other words, roughly once a year, it would say 7PM when it was noon or something like that.

The concern I have is about relying on something which is generally ok but not always ok. Perhaps its better to rely on time.gov instead of having an atomic clock.

Does anyone have more information about this subject?
