From what I know, you are correct. The sapphire crystal is either an 8 or 9 on the hardness scale and a diamond is a 10. There are some metals that are coated w/ something that can scratch the crystal, sorry I don't know what the name of it is. For the most part, I have found that it is very hard to scratch them, I have hit mine very hard on random objects and it is still like new. Hope this helped.
