This post is a great opportunity to do a comparison.
I owned a Rolex GMT for fifteen years. I loved it and wore it 24/7 for ten years. It took a tremendous amount of abuse and I got my money's worth out of it. After ten years it was looking pretty beat up and I put it in a drawer until recently. It is now being refurbished.
About a year ago I started looking for a diving watch but couldn't find anything I liked at a reasonable price. I wasn't ready to spring for a new submariner and I looked at the bond watch and just didn't like the color. Then this summer I saw the black seamaster pro and I bought it. I can't speak highly enough about the quality, comfort and value. But still, it just didn't look like a dive watch was supposed to look. It looked too nice, like a dress watch. I still wanted that submariner.
So I bought a ten year old seadweller from a reputable dealer that does alot of business repairing and selling used rolexes. I just got it Tuesday and I love it.
The seamaster is just as accurate. They both have saphire crystals, date and no ugly magnifier over the date. The seamaster is thinner but has a larger diameter. The seamaster is more legible at night and has a beautiful dial. The tritium in the seadweller is fading. The seadweller has solid end links but the seamaster has solid all links (bond bracelet) and a much nicer, more comfortable, quieter bracelet. The seadwellers bracelet is easier to do fine adjustments to size on. They both have a greater depth rating than I'll ever need. The seadwellers helium release valve isn't as noticable, which I like. I could buy two new seamasters for what I paid for the used seadweller.
But today I'm wearing the seadweller. It just looks like what a man's watch should look like and I'm happy I bought it. As the newness wears off I'm sure I'll go back to wearing the seamaster more, but there's just something about the rolex.
I feel that the seamster is every bit as good as, if not better than the submariner. It is by far a much better value. Still its something you buy and wear based on emotion. Go with your emotions. Or get both ;-)
