In Response To: Rolex. Good? ()

My first adventure into the world of "fine" timepieces was with a Bond SMP (this was before Bond made it famous). I loved the watch, but I still lusted after the "original" Bond watch, a Rolex Submariner, so when I came into the money to do so, I traded the SMP in on a Rolex. It's a nice looking watch, and keeps time as well as any mechanical watch (mine only lost about 1 sec/month!), but it just feels so flimsy! The basketweave bracelet on the Omega nicely balances the heft of the watch, but the Rolex felt like a 100 meter yacht anchored with a piece of clothesline. Rolex made a very big deal when they added the SEL (Solid End Link) to the ends of their bracelets, glossing over the fact that the rest of the links were still rolled metal. All of the basketweave links are (and as far as I know have always been) solid links, and hence the solid, substantial feel to the bracelet. I tried and tried to fall in love with the Submariner, to no avail. In the end I traded back "up" to another Bond SMP. To paraphrase the gun freaks, they'll have to pry my SMP off my cold, stiff arm!
