Black is the best... it's somewhat reminiscent of the Rolex GMT Master II, which is Rolex's take on the 2nd time zone function watch. That's the short answer to your question... the numbers on the 'face' (you meant on the bezel, right? The GMT has no numbers at all on the face) are to count time in an alternate time zone (using the long red 24-hour GMT hand). Presumably, that second time zone can be GMT (Greenwich Mean Time or UK time, AKA 'Zulu' time), hence the name of the watch. I find this convenient, since I frequently need to know the current time, GMT. The numbered bezel rotates, so that you can make quick checks of the time in other time zones, etc. For a more full explanation of setting this watch, etc, see my post from a few months back... I am now a GMT owner and can confirm the accuracy of the description.
