I was just curious as to who gave you this info, particularly if it was a dealer.

To answer your question, no on both accounts. Neither Rolex nor Omega are "handmade," though some amount of hand-craftmanship goes into each watch. Also, it does not take a year to make a Rolex, probably much less than a day. Rolex production was approximately 900,000 watches in 1998, Omega produced about 600,000. If it took a year to make one, seems to me they must have started an awful long time ago...
