To power a manual wind you must, of course, wind it. An auto winds itself from the movement of your arm as you wear the watch. Some autos can also be wound, like the SMP. About 40 turns are sufficient to wind the SMP. Even so, I don't think it is correct to say that autos "need" to be wound.

There are some autos that cannot be manually wound. The 7S26 movement found in some Seiko watches is an example.
