I think much of the problem is that people really don't know what to expect of an expensive watch.

Weight, performance, feel, prestige, style, precious metals all contribute to the worth you will or won't perceive in any specific watch.

For some people, a single brand name can say all they feel they need to know. Others are very attenitive to details and compare their choices of watches very carefully.

Unless your objective is simply to buy prestige, there does not seem to be one single thing that make a fine watch so special and worth more. Much of the value is in things like ambience, knowledge of details and internals far beyond the awareness or caring of the average public, associations with interesting people or characters or events, and an attraction to the style and look of the watch of your choice.
