Dear All
Here's a little experience that spoilt me leisurely Sunday afternoon walk in the mall.
I'm currently in the process of buying my second Omega (1st being a quartz SMP).
On returning to the dealer where I bought it (I won't mention the name for obvious reasons!)), I was interested in a SMP America's Cup he had in the window. "Oh No" he said, you'd be wasting your time upgrading to that. "In fact, you'd be wasting your time upgrading to any Omega". Baring in mind he is an official Omega dealer, he then went on to give me the huge merits of owning a Rolex (he stocks both). Gushing about how they were much more of an investment, he added that going for a more costlier Omega would simply be a "sideways" step, and how he couldn't think of any model in the range worth "investing" in.
Furthermore, there would be little or no interest in my SMP from a trade-in point of view, he would give no reductions for cash on the Rolex because unlike the Omega's, "the market wasn't awash with them". (In fact, I had already decided to hang on to my beloved "first" decent watch). There would also be no reduction for cash, as "unlike Omega's and Zenith's, the rarity of Rolex's presently meant that they could be very arrogant with their pricing policy".
I must say I'm a little staggered at this, especially from an authorised Omega dealer. I've always considered the Omega range to be far more desirable in style, only lacking that "emperor's new clothes" quality of the Rolex name. Fair enough, Rolex's probably do hold their value better, but all this cloak and dagger about them being rare as hens teeth to get hold of left me cold. And so much for his colleagues assurance less than 12 months ago that they would gladly accept the SMP as a trade-in on anything!
Clearly this dealer has swallowed the populist view that anything with Rolex on it HAS to be better. I would have expected more of a balanced view from a watch dealer. Clearly he isn't and enthusiast!
Which still leaves me wondering where to go next...
