Surprisingly, prices in Europe are *not* better on most Swiss watches than they are in the US. The only travel destination I have heard of being a Swiss watch buyer's dream is the Middle Eastern country of Dubai.

Also, don't forget currency exchange fees really add up on an expensive purchase. Plus there is some chance that the watch could get stolen from your friend's luggage before he gets back. Then what do you do?

You'd be much better buying in the US. Several people here can recommend an authorized dealer that can give you as much as 35% off retail. You can arrange the purchase by email, telephone or fax and they'll ship the watch to you. Unless you are in the same state, you avoid sales tax that way too.
