Markus,
There are no hard and fast rules really. All trades are done at your own risk, but... The great thing about this forum is that it is very open, friendly, and honest. If you are unsure about a trader, or want opinions, just ask. No one will get offended if you ask about the 'validity' of a seller. That's the very thing that keeps this place honest.
Payments tend to be bank transfers, PayPal or meet up in person. PayPal seems to be fairly common, as it does offer protection.
Most sellers offer international insured shipping.

: Hi there,
: Are there any experienced traders out there who can give me a
: dummies guide to buying on the forum.
: I'm new to the whole vintage watch scene and would really
: appreciate some pointers on buying/selling and how to protect
: myself from scams.
: I guess a lot of it should be common sense, but what I'd really
: like to know is what the most common forms of payment is aswell
: as shipping internationally. Are there any important questions I
: should be asking to make sure I'm dealing with a serious seller.
: Thanks,
: Markus
