I agree the article makes very valid point and substantiates them reasonably. But I also agree that for the same amount of money, one usually gets more "feel for the buck" from vintage pieces.
I do own both modern watches and used watches that are too recent to qualify as vintage - maybe 7 or 10 years old - and I too find good features that make me like them as well.
