Re: A combined reply... Please Read...

Thanks Chuck...I think I need to clarify things a bit...

Watches used to be something I was "sort of" into, but I wan't educated in the subtleties of "chronograph vs. chronometer, etc." or as into it as I am now. My parents bought me the (insert brand here that begins with R and ends with X) when I was 21, and I still have it to this day. That was my main watch for many years, and as a gift, I took it for granted (the way the hand moves, etc.).

My father recently passed away (April), and I inherited a bunch of watches, and then decided to purchase some on my own as sort of starting a new chapter in life, and in the interest of having my son inherit them. Full disclosure, he had a nice set of Croton watches, which are WAY less expensive than the "other brands" all automatic, and these were his favorite watches (he bought them on that MSNBC show). One was the last watch that my Mom bought for him for his 65th birthday, which he never made it to.

If you look at why I posted amounts, brands, etc., it was all in context, and not "bragging." the other guy seemed to kind of go out of his way to go after me, and I understand that people can have bad days, and the internet is a fun place to call people all sorts of names with impunity.

The other guy said something to the effect that he liked Omegas better so he "switched" from Rolex to Omega. That was interesting, because I know I am not wealthy enough to just chuck a Rolex into the wastebasket because I fancy another brand (and for what reason by the way? Probably for a tiny, subjective reason that is on par with second hands not hitting the mark on a quartz watch I am sure). If he wants to get rid of the Rolex I will gladly take it (or them) off his hands!

Rolex, Tag, Omega, they are all good, and I am blessed to be able to have a nice collection (which I think I need to dial back on the spending because I have a wedding/honeymoon coming up...lol!)

Thanks again for your reply.

: Omega Seamaster 2221.80 vs. 2220.80 Posted
: By: Peter Date: 6/9/07 20:40:02 GMT

: Ok, so I bought a lovely quartz Seamaster
: 2221.80 for $1325. Looks great, runs like a
: champ, etc. I opted for the quartz movement,
: because I already have a Rolex Submariner,
: Tag Carrera, and a handful of other
: automatic watches, and didn't (at the time)
: feel that I needed to spend $1,000 more for
: the same watch that 99% of the public
: wouldn't know the difference if they saw it
: on my wrist (and to have another watch to
: wind, set time, date everytime I wanted to
: wear it). I thought it would be good to have
: a "nice quartz watch" that I
: wouldn't have to worry about starting up
: again whenever I didn't wear it for awhile,
: and I admit, it is nice to just go over to
: the watch valet, pick it up, and put it on.
: Convenience is certainly something thing
: to consider.

: I personally find that I just don't care as
: much for Quartz as I do Mechanicals or
: Tuning Forks. 10 years ago, it didn't matter
: to me at all, now it does.

: I have checked out the various "quartz
: vs. automatic" articles online, but
: something in me sort of wishes I had the
: automatic, or possibly even own both. Am I
: nuts? Nope, You're not nuts. You're
: probably experiencing the same thing I do.

: I plan on passing these watches down to my
: son (not yet born) so I am a little
: concerned about the longevity of quartz
: watches, although my father (who recently
: passed away) passed down to me, among
: others, an original Accutron Spaceview,
: which is also battery powered, and runs
: great, along with a late 80's RADO DiaStar,
: also quartz which also runs with no issues.
: So, in say 25 years, wouldn't I still be
: able to find batteries, etc. for an Omega
: Seamaster quartz? Now that they've
: removed the mercury, batteries are probably
: not a major issue.

: Another issue: I noticed that even the high
: end quartz watches don't always have the
: second hand falling right on the
: hashmarks...one would think that a watch
: such as Omega would have this absolutely
: perfect, but this might just be par for the
: course, as I noticed that the RADO second
: hand also doesn't fall right on the mark
: either. I'd think that could be adjusted
: easily enough. Just so you know, Quality
: control/assurance is a problem that many
: watch companies [unfortunately, especially
: Omega] seem to be suffering with.

: As fellow Omega owners if you saw a guy with
: a quartz Seamaster, would you all be like,
: "Oh, that guy went on the cheap and
: bought the quartz version?" Or what
: would you think? Well, it's none of my
: business what you wear. I'd be more excited
: to see a mechanical [in particular a
: chronograph] though.

: Comments? I wouldn't let other people
: tell you what watch you should buy/own/wear.
: What I or anyone else thinks is largely
: irrelevent unless you decide my opinion is
: important. Just because I have a preference
: for mechanicals, or at the very least tuning
: fork electrics doesn't mean that they are
: the best or only choice for anyone else.

: I understand your yearning for a mechanical
: though. And I could see flipping the quartz
: for a automatic.

: Rod's post is presented in a color which
: matches the opinion I have of his
: attitude...

: Peter

: First let say welcome to the Omega family
: .... you've made an excellent decision to
: get an Omega. Hmmm... OK...

: Having said that I'm wondering why you feel
: the need to in at least two postings that
: I've read by you on this site, you've let it
: be known that you own a Rolex and a Tag
: ...... I'm wondering why you have a bee
: up your bottom about a first-timer's post.
: The fellow is a first time poster. Is it
: really a big deal that he posted what he
: paid?

: and in this posting you seem compelled to
: tell us how much you spent on your Omega
: (really tacky} ...... and you worry about
: what people will think of you and your
: purchase. And why in this posting you
: seem compelled to go on a couple of
: paragraph rant on all sorts of topics...

: Doing so would be about as petty as someone
: going on a multi-paragraph rant because
: someone didn't match up their parenthesis or
: brackets correctly.

: It's been my experience that many if not
: most of the Omega owners I've had the good
: fortune to have met over the years also own
: other "Luxury" watches such as
: Rolex, unfortunately Tag can't quite make
: the leap to the luxury watch category.
: Opinions vary, have you priced a vintage
: Monaco or Siffert Chronomatic lately?

: And when talking about about our watches,
: we've usually agreed that we weren't real
: impressed with our Rolex's which is why we
: switched to Omega and we've never regretted
: or cared about what others may think of us
: for having done so ........ Which is
: interesting considering the content and
: nature of your post.

: why is it so important to you......... and
: who really gives a damn if the second hand
: doesn't fall EXACTLY on the hash mark unless
: you're the timer at some sporting
: event...... Perhaps because he spent
: well over a thousand dollars on a watch. Is
: it asking too much for it to be correct?
: Apparently it is to some.

: I don't look at the second hand long enough
: to determine EXACTLY where it is ... and I
: don't know anyone (except you) who does.
: Then again some people don't get out much.

: I think that most of us have more important
: things to do with our time than obsess over
: our hash marks . Or obsess over
: nit-picky trivialities in a first time
: poster's query.

: Unfortunately your posting reminds me of the
: same type of elitist snobbery that seems to
: afflict folk who try to buy status .......
